Media sources report that New Jerseyโ€™s Department of Labor and Workforce Development imposed a $650 million bill on UBER.

Allegedly, UBER misclassified drivers as independent contractors instead employees. And in doing so, UBER avoided paying millions in normal payroll obligations.

As detailed in our previous blog (NJ EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION AUDITS COMING-7/29/2019), New Jersey is increasing audits of worker classifications.

If an audit changes the tax or employment law status of an individual, the financial consequences can be devastating. Catch-up tax payments, fines, penalties, as well as other sanctions add up.

SO, review your treatment of independent contractors or you might be next.

For insights on tactics New Jersey might use, see https://www.nj.gov/labor/assets/PDFs/Misclassification%20Report%202019.pdf
