Eight members of the Committee on Ways and Means of the House of Representatives sent a letter to the Director of the IRS requesting that the tax filing season be extended. No particular date was detailed in the letter, but last yearโ€™s experience was noted.

The membersโ€™ letter cited:
โ€ข pandemic-related health and economic burdens on taxpayers and preparers,
โ€ข a shortened filing season (from February 12, 2021 to April 15, 2021),
โ€ข the IRSโ€™ continuing problems with last yearโ€™s left over work (unprocessed returns and mail), and
โ€ข increased use of free preparation services.
