The Department of Labor (DOL) has detailed a “best practices” list to help fiduciaries of defined benefit and defined contribution plans, such as 401(k) plans, ensure that plan participants and beneficiaries receive promised benefits when they reach retirement age.
The following are some of the “red flags” that warn or indicate a problem with missing or nonresponsive participants:
• A number of missing or nonresponsive participants.
• A number of terminated vested participants who have reached normal retirement age but have not started receiving their pension benefits.
• Missing, inaccurate, or incomplete contact information, census data, or both (e.g., incorrect or out-of-date mail, email, and other contact information, partial social security numbers, missing birthdates, missing spousal information, or placeholder entries).
